What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

Quick Answer: SEG pays you 4-15p per kWh for surplus electricity you export to the grid.

Understanding the Smart Export Guarantee

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-backed scheme that ensures solar panel owners get paid for surplus electricity they export to the national grid.

How SEG Works

When your solar panels generate more electricity than you're using, the surplus is automatically exported to the grid. Energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers must offer SEG tariffs to pay you for this exported electricity.

Current SEG Rates (2026)

  • Fixed rates: 4-8p per kWh
  • Variable rates: 8-15p per kWh depending on time of export
  • Agile tariffs: Can pay more during peak demand

Eligibility Requirements

  • MCS certified installation (Midland Solar provides this)
  • Smart meter or export meter installed
  • System size under 5MW
  • Registration with chosen energy supplier

We Help You Register
