Search “solar installers near me” anywhere in the Midlands and you'll get dozens of results — and quotes for the same roof that can differ by thousands of pounds. The good news is that a few minutes of checking separates accountable local solar installers from the firms you'd regret hiring. Here's what to verify before you sign anything.
- 1.Check the MCS register. Reputable solar panel installers hold MCS certification — look the company up on the public installer search at mcscertified.com. An MCS certificate for your system is also what energy suppliers ask for before paying you for exported electricity under the Smart Export Guarantee.
- 2.Look for consumer-protection membership. Schemes such as HIES cover home energy installations with deposit protection, insurance-backed guarantees and access to independent dispute resolution if a complaint can't be settled directly with the installer.
- 3.Confirm electrical registration. Solar PV and battery storage are electrical work. NICEIC or NAPIT registration means the firm's electrical competence is assessed by a recognised certification body and the installation can be properly certified under building regulations.
- 4.Ask warranty questions in writing. Who stands behind the workmanship guarantee, for how long, and is it insurance-backed if the installer stops trading? Get the panel, inverter and battery manufacturers' warranty terms in writing as well.
- 5.Insist on a written, itemised quote. Panel and inverter make and model, scaffolding, DNO paperwork and VAT treatment (0% on residential solar installations until 31 March 2027) should all be listed line by line. Treat “sign today” discounts as a red flag.
