Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

Quick Answer: Most roofs are suitable. South-facing is ideal, but east/west orientations work well too.

Is Your Roof Right for Solar?

The good news is that most UK roofs are suitable for solar panels. Here's what makes an ideal roof and what alternatives exist if yours isn't perfect.

Ideal Roof Conditions

  • Orientation: South-facing is optimal (100% efficiency)
  • Angle: 30-40 degrees provides best UK performance
  • Shading: Minimal shading from trees, buildings, or chimneys
  • Space: Approximately 20m² for a 4kW system
  • Condition: Roof in good structural condition

Non-Ideal But Still Viable

  • East/West facing: Still achieves 85-90% of optimal output
  • Flat roofs: Panels mounted on frames at optimal angle
  • Partial shading: Microinverters can mitigate impact
  • Multiple roof sections: Split systems across different areas
