Understanding the Smart Export Guarantee
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-backed scheme that ensures solar panel owners get paid for surplus electricity they export to the national grid.
How SEG Works
When your solar panels generate more electricity than you're using, the surplus is automatically exported to the grid. Energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers must offer SEG tariffs to pay you for this exported electricity.
Current SEG Rates (2026)
- Fixed rates: 4-8p per kWh
- Variable rates: 8-15p per kWh depending on time of export
- Agile tariffs: Can pay more during peak demand

- MCS certified installation (Midland Solar provides this)
- Smart meter or export meter installed
- System size under 5MW
- Registration with chosen energy supplier

All package prices assume every panel fits on a single roof elevation. The price covers the cost of scaffolding to one elevation. If your roof needs scaffolding on more than one elevation, or has restricted access, that additional cost is quoted separately after survey. Prices include VAT. Domestic solar and battery storage is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. Subject to a free technical survey. We will confirm the final price in writing before any work is booked.
