Why bird-proof solar panels?
The 8-12 inch cavity between solar panels and a tiled roof creates the perfect nesting site — warm, dry, predator-free, with a roof "wall" on three sides. Once pigeons claim the space, you typically see (1) panel shading from accumulated nest material, (2) acidic droppings staining the panel undersides and frames, (3) cable damage where birds peck insulation, and (4) blocked rainwater runoff causing pooling. We see this on roughly 1 in 4 Midlands solar systems that haven't been bird-proofed at install. Suburban Birmingham, Coventry city centre, and Leicester near the river are particularly affected.
How our bird-proofing works
We use marine-grade 304 stainless steel mesh — 25mm aperture, 1.2mm wire diameter, UV-stable, expected lifespan 20+ years. The mesh is fitted around the perimeter of the panel array using stainless clips that engage with the existing panel mounting rails. No drilling into panels, no roof penetration. Airflow under the panels is preserved (critical for panel cooling and yield), and rainwater drains freely. Fit time is typically 4-6 hours for a domestic system, 1-2 days for a typical commercial installation.
Cost of bird-proofing in 2026
Domestic retrofit (4kW system, ~10 panels): £900-£1,400 supplied and fitted. Larger domestic (6-8kW): £1,200-£1,800. Commercial scaled by array perimeter — typically £6-£10 per metre of perimeter mesh. We always quote with scaffolding included (or harness work for low-pitch domestic). Bundle saving if combined with annual service or panel clean.
Areas covered
We bird-proof across the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Worcestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Shropshire. Same coverage as our solar maintenance service.
