Solar Panel Grants in Derby: What's Available in 2026?

Solar Panel Grants Available to Derby Homeowners in 2026

Derby homeowners have access to several government-backed schemes that can significantly reduce the upfront cost of solar panel installation. The main routes to funding are ECO4, the Warm Homes Plan, 0% VAT on solar installations and, for some, the Great British Insulation Scheme.

ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation)

ECO4 is the UK's largest domestic energy efficiency scheme, funded by the major energy suppliers. It targets households in fuel poverty or those receiving certain means-tested benefits. If your Derby home has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G and you receive qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Child Tax Credit etc.), you may be eligible for fully-funded or heavily subsidised solar panel installation.

Derby City Council works with ECO4 delivery partners. To check eligibility, contact your energy supplier directly or use the government's ECO4 eligibility checker.

Warm Homes Plan

The Warm Homes Plan is the government's flagship successor to ECO4, targeting owner-occupiers and private renters with the least energy-efficient homes. For 2026, the scheme offers grants of £15,000 upwards for heat pumps, solar panels and insulation measures. Derby households with EPC ratings of D or below should apply early as funding is allocated on a first-come basis.

Zero-Rate VAT on Solar in 2026

Since April 2022, all domestic solar panel installations in the UK carry 0% VAT — a saving of 20% versus the standard rate. For a typical Derby installation costing £7,000–£8,500, this represents a saving of £1,400–£1,700. This isn't a grant but effectively a permanent government subsidy that makes solar significantly more accessible.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

The Smart Export Guarantee pays Derby homeowners for every unit of electricity exported to the national grid. Current SEG rates from major suppliers range from 4p to 15p per kWh, providing an additional income stream of £100–£250 per year for a typical 4kWp system.

Derby-Specific Council Schemes

Derby City Council periodically offers additional local funding for energy efficiency measures through its Housing Renewal and Sustainability programmes. Check the Derby City Council website regularly for current offers — the council has previously administered Midlands Net Zero Hub funding which included support for solar installations in eligible postcodes.
